The GWA fully support the idea of vocational training as a route to local employment and would like to encourage the GoG to explore avenues in which this can be achieved in the near future. We would like to encourage Joe Gingell to continue in his worthy fight for our youth and for those wishing a career change. The GWA was represented at the demonstration by committee member Zohra El Gharbaoui
The GWA are delighted to announce the next date of our regular 'drop in' evenings. This is an opportunity for both members of the GWA and members of the community to come and meet with the committee and chat informally on issues that they may wish raised by the GWA or community projects they think that the GWA can be involved with. We can also update our membership on current projects. We would like to open our doors wide for our membership and give a greater transparency to our projects and extend a listening ear and a welcome hand. In such, we hope to represent our membership to the fullest and give a greater sense of involvement to everyone of our valued members. It also gives members an excellent opportunity to meet with the elected committee in person in an informal setting. The first next dates are as follows:
27th Sep 25th October 29th November. We will be holding our open meetings at John Macintosh Hall at 6pm in the studio. We can also be contacted by email on We look forward to seeing you there.
The Gibraltar Womens Association find the Honourable Gilbert Licudi’s recent behaviour in parliament completely unacceptable and not becoming from a gentleman or a minister. This is not a gender issue, but one of complete lack of respect for a fellow MP. The use of profanity within the House must never be accepted and Ms Nahon has been disrespected for doing her job. It cannot be how the house is represented. Parliament is televised and listened to in homes throughout Gibraltar and threatening behaviour of any kind, shape or form must not be tolerated in local society. Ministers must remember the role that they are entrusted in, and as such be accountable for their behaviour at all times. We are saddened that HM Government, which had an opportunity to let Mr Licudi apologise and draw a line under this matter, has compounded this behaviour by laying blame on Ms H N and accusing her of a lack of professionalism. This is an example of further bullying. Furthermore an example of Bullying at work is when someone repeatedly victimises, humiliates, threatens or intimidates AND their actions create a risk to health and safety. Some examples of bullying are: •insulting, yelling or swearing . The Opposition should be taking a firm stand at this unacceptable behaviour and we are disappointed this,to date, has not been forthcoming. As an independent in the house Ms Nahon must not be ostracised for speaking out. Independents must be encouraged for the modernisation of Gibraltar’s governance and not victimised. The speaker of the House is also encouraged to be firmer and ensure that there are consequences to this misconduct. An apology is the least to expect in such circumstances and blame should not be turned to Ms Nahon in any way shape or form. The GWA call for a review on the Code of Conduct in Parliament and that the government publish an in house anti bullying policy with consequences of violating the code.
The Gibraltar Women's Association welcome the Bill to amend the civil marriage act to allow for the marriage of same sex couples.
Every step on the road to equality is vital to a fair society. We hope that the legislation will be passed by parliament, after the required waiting period required as per the constitution, without further delay. We wish to congratulate the Equality Rights Group for campaigning for this fundamental right.
The Gibraltar Women's Association's first photographic competition was launched on International Women's Day and is part of the GWA's 50th anniversary celebrations.
The aims of the competition were to encourage a diverse representation of women beyond that afforded by mainstream media and to celebrate women's positive achievements and their valuable contributions to their respective communities. The exhibition is currently on display on the Lower Exhibition room, John Mackintosh Hall until Tuesday 14th June.
